Mom credits cannabis oil for helping son

Eli Wooton, 6, suffers from a rare form of epilepsy, which causes him to have seizures. His mother says one treatment changed his life.

"I was trying to be the nurse and the doctor and treat at home, but there was nothing we could do. We were helpless," Eli's mother, Rita Wooton, said.

Last July, Eli started using cannabis oil as a way to overcome seizures. In 2014, a law passed in Kentucky, allowing the use of the oil to treat children like Eli.

"I would love to take a football field of folks that are non-believers or who are against it, to show them, 'hey, this has worked for us,'" Wooton said.

Eli recently graduated from kindergarten, a milestone his mother never thought was possible. Her once non-verbal child is able to communicate and it has been months since his last seizure.

"After six years of having a child or a baby that couldn't tell us anything, we are finally getting to meet him," his mom said. "I mean, we know our son now."

Eli had a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) implanted about two years ago. His mother said while it is still active, she has not had to manually control it since he started taking cannabis oil. She also said they were able to cut back on Eli's anti-seizure medications.

Rita Wooton hopes by sharing her son's story, she will inspire others to never give up hope.
